Toki Onjouji (園城寺 怜 Onjōji Toki) is a third year at Senriyama Girls' High School. She is a sickly person. Her closest friend and caretaker is Ryuuka Shimizudani. She used to be on the schools third team but after her hospitalization, her ranking increased.

Appearance[]

She has brown hair and blue eyes. She wears the standard Senriyama school uniform and knee-high socks.

Personality[]

Toki is physically weak that she is constantly being cared for by Ryuuka Shimizudani. Although she cares for Ryuuka and other members, she doesn't want to become a burden to them as she is always being hospitalized.

While playing she is very smart and astute (such as how she utilizes her powers), although she also shows a bit of hubris and a defeatist attitude. Against Teru Miyanaga, she attempted to fight the champion head-on, but failed, this lead to her thinking the match was lost and that it was a mistake for Senriyama Girls' High School to put her as their ace. When Kirame Hanada began calling tiles and showing Toki the path to victory, her disposition changed, and she tried her best to help Kirame keep Teru down. Without either player saying anything, they both knew they had the same goal and had to work together in order to get there.

Instead of securing second place for Senriyama in order to move onto the finals (such as by allowing Teru to continue her renchan and drop one of the other schools to 0, as Senriyama had a 30,000 point lead on third place Achiga), Toki enabled Kuro Matsumi's baiman win against Teru, prolonging the match and giving the other two schools a chance at moving on that this shows her resolve to get her school to first place.

Plot[]

Introduction Arc (Toki Manga)[]

Jealous class

Toki arrives at school and feels depressed about switching classes and the fact that she'll have to learn about every new person again. Suddenly a girl shouts good morning from behind. She then introduces herself as Ryuuka Shimizudani and wishes for them to get along this school year. As the day continues the teacher decides the students will pick groups and Ryuuka ends up picking Toki as the very first person. When Ryuuka then sits beside her, Toki tells her that she isn't good at anything and that it is no advantage picking her. She then feels the jealous stares of those not chosen by Ryuuka.

On the way home, Toki thinks that maybe the girl is just bullying her and that her peaceful school life is over. Ryuuka then meets her and decides to try and walk home together but Toki runs away to a nearby park. As Ryuuka tries several times to get along with her, Toki finally asks why she was chosen. Ryuuka tells her that she is taciturn and that nobody has noticed her charm yet and asks if she wants to be friends. However she also asks that Toki doesn't try to become someone "special" to her. Toki then agrees but says that Ryuuka doesn't try to be someone "special" to her as well.

The next day she walks home with Toki and asks her to play more outside of school. Toki then tells herself how she made such a wonderful friend but then remembers how she doesn't want to be anyone special to her. They begin to play badminton but Toki was horrible at it. Ryuuka then takes Toki to visit her grandmother and they eventually play mahjong. On the way home, Toki is fascinated by the sport and next time she will defeat grandma, having taken quite the beating from Ryuuka's grandmother.

The following day they take lunch outside and read about the rules to mahjong. When Toki asks her a question, Ryuuka decides to get a book from her locker. She is then confronted by a pushy Ayumi Shinji but is saved from violence by Ayumi's friend Youko Nogami. While Youko is blaming Toki and saying that she is Ryuuka's best friend, Ryuuka appears to tell the girls that she doesn't like what they are doing. Youko then cries and tells Ryuuka that Toki is no good for her. Toki tells herself that she knows this better than anyone else but still likes being around Ryuuka. She then challenges Youko to a mahjong match to see whom is best suited to be around Ryuuka. After antagonizing her a bit, Youko agrees to the challenge but states that the loser will have to stop being friends with Ryuuka. Toki accepts but Ryuuka and Ayumi also join in the match.

Showdown Arc[]

Middle school toki victory

Toki feels very confident since she won a big hand her first time but Ryuuka decides to train her a bit before the match, drilling her hard about suji and discard order.

Later they all meet in the mahjong club room and the match begins. Throughout the match Youko was in control. It wasn't until Toki hit with a baiman did she take the lead. However, she encouraged Ryuuka to win and Ryuuka ended up winning the match. Youko and Ayumi told her that playing mahjong was fun and the president even invited them to the club to play.

That afternoon Ryuuka and Toki decided to swing in the park and talk about the game. Toki noticed something with Ryuuka then asked her if they could stop being "friends". She then explains that she wants to be real friends with her but Ryuuka runs off saying she has errands to run. The next day she gets yelled at by Youko who finally pushes her to go see Ryuuka after school. While going home she walks with Ayumi and she tells Toki of the situation with Youko and Ryuuka. She then grabs Toki's butt and wishes her luck. Toki then arrives but Ryuuka won't let her in until Toki gives her to the count of three. Ryuuka then bursts open the door and yells. Toki laughs and heads inside. After a bit of awkwardness, she asks Ryuuka to do a shared diary with her and get to know each other better.

The next day they exchange the diary and think of joining the mahjong club.

Izumi Challenge Arc[]

Upon entering the mahjong club, they are greeted with streamers and a banner even though they informed Yayoi Yokeguchi that they are only temporary members. Toki says that she wanted all four to join and when Yayoi says she can start getting better from now on, she reminds her that she said she could be a regular as soon as she joined. Yayoi manages to convince her that she can still improve. Toki and her friends start interacting with the others and soon begin to play three player mahjong in groups. Toki then begins to think that what made talking to people easier was the game of mahjong and that if she starts playing with others, they can also be friends. After a few games and having fun, she leaves with her friends.

Toki lays at her desk depressed that there is no club activities today. She wishes to get stronger before next year's tournament because the president she thinks the president has great expectations of her. Ryuuka then invites her friends to her house. While changing to go swimming in the pool, she tells Ryuuka she's a bit jealous. Ryuuka then drops her necklace and when Toki tries to grab it, Ryuuka snatches it from her. Toki thinks her reaction is strange and wishes she would tell her about the pendant. Ryuuka says she will in time and they leave for the pool. Upon seeing Ayumi and Youko, she thinks she's experiencing deja vu. Toki then realizes she has seen this before. She gets a bit dizzy and falls forward into Ryuuka. She plays it off as motion sickness and then goes and plays with Youko. Walking home after the visit, Ryuuka asks if she's okay and asks if she needs to go to the hospital. Toki says she's fine. As the girls talk with each other, a figure watches them in the distance.

Walking home with her friends Ryuuka is suddenly shot with a water gun. A young girl appears and apologizes then takes the girls to her "friends" place. The girl introduces herself as Izumi Nijou and the place is a mahjong parlor. Toki is excited but Ayumi informs everyone that Izumi did all this on purpose to get them there. Izumi locks the door and challenges them to a game. Toki gets excited as the begin to play. Youko and Izumi both declare riichi and Toki says she's been controled by the dora again and has a lot to learn. She takes her time but Izumi hits her for 12,000. Izumi praises her and then calls her stupid twice. Ryuuka wins the next two hands. The last one makes Toki complain because she had a good hand and was the dealer. Izumi tries to push her hand but Toki wins for 8,000. She thinks Izumi is a nasty brat but doesn't dislike her. Toki's next hand looks good but suddenly she looks through time again. After the flash forward, Ryuuka is worried about her and tries to leave. Toki convinces her to stay and resume the match. She has a good hand and declares riichi. She tries to calculate the points and thinks she will be in the lead if she wins. Toki then thinks about her dreams and believes she can see the future. Izumi interrupts her and she decides to concentrate on the match. Toki wins the next hand with a baiman and moves into first place. Ryuuka wins the next two hands and it depresses Izumi. Toki encourages her not to give up and have fun until the end. Ryuuka wins the next hand and ends the match with Toki winning the game. She scolds Ryuuka a bit and says her possible hand gets her excited. The girls then leave but Toki wants to play with Izumi again.

Practice Game Arc[]

She meets Ryuuka early in the morning. She reports that she went to the doctor and they found absolutely nothing wrong with her. Though she thinks to herself that she didn't tell the doctor about her future sight.

Today is open class day and Toki says her mother will come to see her because she doesn't have to work. After Ryuuka leaves for the toilet, Toki remembers her vision from the other day and bolts out the door. She eventually makes her way to a woman that looks like Ryuuka. The bell rings and the woman tells Toki not to tell Ryuuka that she is there. Toki makes her way back to class and asks Ryuuka a few questions and decides its a mystery. Ryuuka and Ayumi ask who came for Toki and she points to her mother in the back room. Back at their seats, Toki starts to think about her powers and concludes that for now, her powers are useless. Her mother sees her worrying and checks to see if she is alright. This embarasses Toki but makes Ryuuka a little envious. Suddenly Ryuuka's mother walks in the door. She notices Ryuuka being flustered but together they continue their work. Later, Toki and the girls visit Ryuuka's grandmother house and cook dinner. She walks home with her mother after the meal.

Toki reacts

The mahjong club take a hike up a mountain for special training. During this trip Yayoi informs the girls they will have a practice game. This excites Toki and she brags to the others about defeating Ryuuka in the previous game they played against Izumi. Yayoi tells them that they will be playing against the Malefic Star. On the way home, the girls talk about their opponent and say they have one week to get stronger.

Toki is taking a nap in the park before Ryuuka wakes her up. She has been studying mahjong techniques and asks Ryuuka to quiz her. The girls promise to win the practice game but are interrupted by a dog. Toki flees and hides in some bushes and later hides behind Ryuuka till the dog and her owner leave.

The day of the practice game, they are informed that only two people will show up and only one is from the club team. Toki says she's disappointed but is quickly interrupted by the arrival of Izumi. The president then announces the arrival of the Malefic Star Sera Eguchi. Toki is seated at table A with Sera, Ryuuka, and Yayoi. Toki wins the first two hands. Yayoi wins the next hand and Sera then hand afterwards. Toki thinks Sera is really cool and makes her blush. Sera wins the next hand with a tsumo. She then hits Toki with a big win busting her. Toki is excited at first but then is shocked and starts to cry at the realization she lost. They thank each other for the games and the girls leave.

Confrontation Arc[]

Mrs. Onjouji comes to get Toki for the bath but the girl is asleep. She wakes her up and asks if she is feeling well after her loss. Toki says it was the first time she's cried in front of everyone but is fine. She says her mother worries too much and leaves. She briefly comes back to tell her mom not to play around too much in her room. In the bath she starts talking about club activities before splashing cold water on herself, making her scream.

Sad tokiO

The next day she tells the story about the water to her friends. She says the bath will be fixed soon but tonight she will go to a public bath. Youko then suggests that she stay with Ryuuka for the night and bath there. Toki agrees and asks her mother. That night, Toki is relaxing in the bath but Ryuuka finds it too hot. Ryuuka leaves and Toki begins to wonder if she was enjoying the game from last time. Once out of the bath, the girls begin to eat smashed watermelon. Toki then compares Ryuuka to her mother saying they like to fuss over her. Ryuuka says that is because her mother loves her. This causes Toki to proclaim that Ryuuka loves her and embarrasses the girl before Ryuuka's grandma interrupts. In Ryuuka's room, Ryuuka begins telling Toki about her past. Upon hearing her story, Toki hugs her and says that things must've been hard for her. She then says Ryuuka showed her the real Ryuuka and should show it to others. Ryuuka disagreed and says Toki is all she needs. Toki says that she understands how she feels and that Ryuuka found the real Toki. Ryuuka then tells Toki about the times she let Toki win at mahjong so she could have fun. This upsets Toki and she goes to bed crying. She leaves early in the morning before Ryuuka wakes up.

Back at her house, Toki decides to write a letter. The next morning at school Toki hands Ryuuka the letter. Everyone gathers at the mahjong club after school and Toki says they can express their emotions with a game. Toki says the rules of the game are the same as the first time they all played. Ryuuka says she will play with all her strength and this excites Toki. She says that she understood and doesn't want her to hold back because of her. Toki wins the first hand off of Youko. She then says that if Ryuuka didn't get what she meant, she'd be forced to say "If you lose this match, we aren't friends!" Ryuuka is frustrated and doesn't understand but Toki says she'd have more fun if she played with all her strength. Youko wins the next hand off of Ryuuka causing the girl to use her ability. On the next hand Toki, Youko, and Ayumi riichi . Toki stick the riichi stick upwards and Youko asks why she does that. Toki says it fires her up a bit. Ryuuka then hits with a tsumo yakuman. Toki gets up excited and congratulates Ryuuka but the girl slaps her hand away and tells her get back to her seat. On the next hand Toki looks into the future to see Ryuuka winning the game and a "bad ending" occurring. She decides to change the future. Toki wins the next hand with a tsumo victory. Toki tells her that she doesn't need to hold back and that she underestimated her if she thinks she'd hate Ryuuka if she had won. Ryuuka gets up crying and apologizes to everyone.

Outdoor Class Arc[]

Toki hasn't been to school since the end of the game and has been really sick. We first see her in been sleeping when Ryuuka comes to check on her. That night, she notices the fever has gone up and wonders if she is being punished. She then laments on not knowing how to use her powers properly. She admits on trying to use it a few more times after stopping the yakuman but couldn't do it. As she falls alseep, a shadow appears beside her. She says the burden appears too great for Toki and that she will take care of "this" until she has need of it. The next morning, her fever broke.

Toki and the girls are seen making their way up a mountain during the class. The class then stops for lunch. Ryuuka then starts fussing over her a bit much to Toki's chagrin. She then apologizes to everyone and Mr. Higashi appears from nowhere and takes her photo. They go to the temple after lunch and Ryuuka hangs back and sheds a tear. Toki then asks about it and Ryuuka says its because the thought of happiness and she started crying more when hanging out with Toki. They then go to the aquarium and then the hotel. Toki says she's tired and takes a small nap. When she wakes up and stares at the ceiling she comments that the stain there looks like a human hand. This freaks Ayumi out. Youko then plays along with Toki on scaring Ayumi. She then vaguely remembers a hand near her eye during the shadow's visit. That night they all sing at a bonfire. Toki notices Ryuuka sitting by herself at the lake shore and sits with her. Ryuuka then tries bringing up her insecurities but Toki comforts her on these things. The fireworks start and they both go back to the others.

We are then see a flash forward where the girls are looking through memories in a photo album and are nearing their middle school year. Ryuuka and Toki are in the same class but Ayumi and Youko are in another. Suddenly Ryuuka is grabbed by Sera and the girl asks her out.

Battling Fujishiro Arc[]

Toki looks on as Ryuuka rejects Sera's request to go out with her. In class, Toki and Sera get along as they are seated next to each other. She then notices Sera staring at Ryuuka and asks if she went to this middle school because of Sera. She then tries to bribe Toki. They go out to the vending machine and Sera buys her a drink with what little money she has. Toki drinks it straight down and says she's unsure. She follows Sera and even offers to go out with her herself but Sera says it has to be Ryuuka because of her mahjong skills. Toki says she knew it but it makes her feel sad. Sera then says she has the perfect job for her though.

After school, Toki, Ryuuka, and Sera go to the park where Toki and Ryuuka first played at. Ryuuka is a bit skeptical but Sera says that she's being too defensive and that she moved her and doesn't have any friends. Toki then recalls that Sera was in the national tournament last year and that she called her. Sera then recollects her time at the nationals. Toki listens in amazement and says Sera is cool and wants to know more about her. She then asks about Hiroe Atago. Sera then talks about how they met Nanami Fujishiro and were soundly beaten. Upon hearing about the aftermath of such an event, Toki begins to cry. She exclaims that mahjong can't be used the way Fujishiro does and that playing mahjong is always fun. Ryuuka and Toki then vow to try and help Sera.

Finding Fujishiro Arc[]

Toki decides they all need to hold a special training session. Sera agrees and they try and map out a plan. The plan is simply play a bunch of mahjong matches against strong people. Ryuuka suggests trying to analyze the score sheets but Sera doesn't remember much. She then says that Nanami sort of disappeared last autumn and hasn't been seen since. Toki thinks she may have entered a tournament but the idea was shot down. She then purposes that Nanami might have left Osaka. However, Toki then says the time for meeting her hasn't arrived yet and when it comes they will meet again because that's what her mom told her. Toki departs with Ryuuka shortly after and Toki reconfirms that she does indeed love mahjong. Ryuuka then mentions that Yayoi Yokeguchi has been begging her to join the mahjong club. Toki tells her it's because she's strong and that nobody has really asked for her. Ryuuka then hugs her and says it doesn't matter and to keep doing her best.

Later that night, her mother asked Toki to go out and pick up a few things from the store. As she is walking home a bike nearly hits her. Toki falls to her knees and cries because the sweets she got were crushed in the accident. The girl riding the bike asks if she's okay and then picks her up and places her on the bike. She then rides to Shimeki Diner. The girl and her grandmother begin to treat her but Toki says she's fine. They offer her a meal but Toki declines because it's nearly dinner. The girl offers to take her home and the grandma gives her milk and a small bag. The girl apologizes and tells Toki to come back tomorrow and she will be treated to a meal. At her house, Toki relays what happened to her mother. Her mother reveals the girl is called Natsu Shimeki and that she is strong at mahjong. Toki says maybe she will teach her some mahjong. Her mother also tells Toki that her and her father use to go to dates at Shimeki Diner but Toki doesn't want to hear it. She then suggests a meal to Toki. The following day we see Toki ordering the pancakes with macadamia nuts sauce. When Toki tells Natsu that her parents use to come there a lot, the girl starts crying. Natsu brushes it off and says it's great that her parents get a long so well and offers more pancakes. Toki watches Natsu and thinks that she reminds her of Ryuuka.

At school she tells Ryuuka all about it. Toki mentions they have a mahjong table there and Ryuuka says that she was so busy with Sera's training, she wants to play for fun with Toki. Toki apologizes for not being that good but Ryuuka again tells her it's fine. Toki then thinks that no matter how much she improves, Ryuuka and Sera keep getting farther away. At the training with Sera, she again brings up what makes them different. Sera rebuffs this and tells her there is no point in comparing comparing yourself to others. Toki later tells this to Natsu at the diner. This upsets her and asks Toki if she wants her to teach Sera a lesson. Toki says she's afraid they're leaving her behind. Natsu tells her that she's in the same situation and there is someone she wants to approve of her skills. Toki is amazed someone strong like her needs to work hard and Natsu says they both should work hard.

Toki and the others attend a barbecue but she is still feeling a little down. Izumi tries to cheer her up but ends up hitting her instead. Toki then eats too much and lies down under a tree with Ryuuka. She thinks of everyone around her trying to help and decides to stop feeling down. They see an acquaintance of Sera's and asks to be introduced but she doesn't remember her name. When the girl insults her and takes off her glasses, Sera remembers the girl as Hiroko Funakubo. As they walk and talk, she says that she plays mahjong. Toki tells her that they do to. Hiroko then explains that she knows who she is. Toki takes this a compliment but Hiroko explains that there is nothing remarkable about her. Hiroko says there is no data on Ryuuka and questions why Sera would hang out with these people. She apologizes for making them uncomfortable and digs in her bad and pulls out a jump drive. She says it's Nanami Fujishiro's data. Sera offers what little money she had and Toki and the others do as well. Hiroko says she wants data as payment.

The next day the girls gather for a match at Izumi's family mahjong parlor. Hiroko arrives late and Toki takes her by the hand and says how excited she is. Hiroko brushes her off. Before the game, Toki tells them she won't hold back and she'll show the fruits of her training. Ryuuka goes into limitless heaven first thing and wins with a tsumo . Toki brags a bit about Ryuuka but declares she will win next. Ryuuka wins the next hand off of Sera. Sera laughs and tells everyone she admires Toki's attitude in mahjong which causes Ryuuka to lose concentration. Sera wins the next hand with a tsumo. Toki is happy that she finally became the dealer and tells Ryuuka that she's going to explode just like she did. However, Hiroko wins a quick and cheap tsumo. Hiroko then wins with a hit on Toki. Toki praises her and says she looks cool and mature when playing. The overall outcome for the match had Toki take last place.

Hiroko puts the data on the table and Toki remarks if Sera will take it or not because she put a condition on a win and she didn't win. Hiroko says either way it's hers because Hiroe Atago gave it to her. They all gather and Hiroko explains how and why Hiroe collected the data for Sera. Hiroko offers to look over the data and the girls agree. After the match, Toki and Ryuuka head to Shimeki diner.

Joining the Mahjong Team Arc[]

Toki and Ryuuka are having the house special at the diner and Natsu serves them. She tells the girls that she won't be working there for a while and asks for their support. They both agree and Toki says that she wants to join the mahjong club. The next day she fills out her application for the club in class. Sera comes in and apologizes for the other day. She mentions that she tried calling Hiroe but was blocked by Kinue. At the end of class they join the club and Yayoi is overjoyed.

Before entering, Toki is really nervous. Ryuuka then takes Toki by the hand and says that she will protect her. Once inside they are greeted by Yayoi and Toki says that seeing her face has calmed her down some. They are then introduced to the club president Rine Sonezaki. Most members gather around Ryuuka but leave Toki by herself. Yayoi then appears next to Toki and comforts her. The girls are then paired into separate groups. Toki goes with Yayoi, Murato, and an unnamed player. Murato begins asking her questions about Sera but Yayoi answers them. Toki wastes no time and ends up busting Murato to win her first game. This excites Toki so much she asks to play more games with everyone. Murato screams that she has some nerve but then says that she like Toki and is glad she joined.

Toki and Ryuuka arrive late to the middle school tournament and are admonished by Yayoi. Toki admits that she is pretty nervous. In the monitor room they are instructed to take notes. She then tells Ryuuka that she wished Sera was there but Ryuuka tells her that she's focusing on Nanami right now. Toki says that she wants to play against her too but Ryuuka outright says no. During the match Toki wonders what the role of the vanguard is and Yayoi explains as best she can. Ryuuka and Toki discuss this more in the bathroom and Toki mentions that she should start taking trying to be a vanguard seriously. Ryuuka tells her that it would fit her perfectly and that she'll then try to be captain. Starting the vanguard match she notices that Natsu is Nanami and the girl Sera is looking for. Toki looks a bit down and leaves to text Sera that she may have found the girl she was looking for. She watches the match in amazement and makes commentary throughout.

Preparation Arc (Achiga Manga)[]

Toki first appears looking out at a river, near her team's rest stop. When she collapses Shizuno Takakamo, Ako Atarashi, and Kuro Matsumi rush to her but Ryuuka beats them to her and asks if she is okay. After apologizing, they all sit down and have a bite to eat. Just as she tells the Achiga girls that her health is poor, she is called away.

National Tournament Arc[]

She is shown laying her head on Ryuuka's lap when her teammates come in to check on her. After some back and forth, Senriyama meet to watch video of their opponents matches. Ryuuka and her then recognize Kuro as one of the kind girls from before and afterward informs Ryuuka that despite her cheering they will be their next opponent. When Sera Eguchi says the Matsumi sisters aren't invincible, Toki notices that Kuro is clumsy when forming her hand.

When the second round begins, Toki thanks Kuro for helping her before. During the match, she dominates the competition thanks to her ability to predict discards. After the match she is shown leaning on Ryuuka and says that she was able to win without much effort. Before the Sergeant match, Toki describes the similarity to her and Yuu Matsumi's game. Through the rest of the round she makes brief comments about her teams opponents, while still resting upon Ryuuka's lap.

Final Eight Arc[]

Toki appears walking toward her match and meets Kuro. They then walk togther to the playing hall silently and notice Teru Miyanaga, then the match begins.

She begins strong with her signature ippatsu riichi win, then Teru uses her mirror ability to see through everyone. Even with Toki's abilities, Teru starts a long win streak. With Toki thinking of what to do, we get a flashback to one year ago. Toki congratulates Ryuuka and Sera for making the team and being its ace player. She was a bit reluctant at first but told Ryuuka and Sera about her newfound abilities.

Toki then notices that Kirame Hanada, despite getting beaten by Teru before, isn't giving up and is trying her best. She then figures out that Kirame is making her hand obvious and deals into her hand to stop Teru's winning streak. Kirame tells her that it isn't just her and Teru at the table and Toki then relizes that they have a chance to fight. However, Teru wins the next three hands to send the match into intermission. She spends this time laying down on Ryuuka's lap all the way up till time for the second half.

Despite the efforts of Toki and Kirame, Teru continues her winning ways in the second half. She then thinks back to the time she tried seeing two turns ahead at school. While doing so, she collapsed and was taken to the infirmary, where Ryuuka makes her promise never to do that again. Toki then reveals that she has been practising at home and decides to take the risk. Again with Kirame's help, Toki was able to stop Teru's win streak but her precognition is beginning to take a more and more visible toll on her body.

With Teru winning again, Toki notices that she can't use her ability and later deals into her hand which, she has never done in a public game. We then get another flashback. Here she is in the infirmary and her teammates tell her that they have created a "Toki shift" which will enable her to participate in the upcoming training camp. After she thanks them we are treated to flashes of the camp until Toki walks upon Ryuuka admiring the night lights of the town. They then have a conversation about something Sera said while flying back from last years nationals.

Toki

Toki using triple turn foresight

She then wakes and realizes she was unconscious for less than a turn. She then regains her ability but decides to push it even further by trying to look three turns ahead. After doing so she notices that Kuro will finally do something other than horde the dora. We are then treated to another flashback of Toki, Ryuuka, and Sera in middle school. Here they think of joining the mahjong club and are introduced to Masae Atago, the coach of the team. After doing practice matches, Toki realizes that she was probably on the third team and wants to contribute in anyway she can. So she stays late to clean the club and is later helped by Ryuuka and Sera who want to help her. In the present she uses the three turn ability again to help Kuro put an end to Teru's win streak.

After the match, Toki tries to act like nothing is happening to her, but her opponents quickly see through her ruse as she collapses. Ryuuka runs into the room and collects Toki, who says that the tournament hall's floor is colder than at school. Her entire team runs Toki, in a gurney, to the ambulance, with Sera, Masae, and Ryuuka accompanying her to the hospital. Toki tells Izumi to go and win the sergeant match, to which Izumi tearfully replies to leave it to her.

When she awakens, she says its smells like a hospital. When Izumi Nijou tells her it is one, she calls for Ryuuka. Izumi then tells her that it's close to Ryuuka's match and that she had to tear her away from her, as Ryuuka hadn't left Toki's side since they arrived. Toki then says that's a shame and that she must bear with it. She then jokes about how she might be able to see one hundred turns ahead before asking to watch television because she wants to see Ryuuka.

When she sees Ryuuka doubting herself after Himeko's and Awai's continuous wins, she tells her to remember. We then see a flashback between Ryuuka and Toki. Here, she is sleeping on Ryuuka's lap in the park. After Ryuuka questions her, she says she has a deeper reason for sleeping on her. She then tells her that by her resting on her lap, she is transferring some of her power to her. When Ryuuka remembers this, a fairy like version of Toki appears beside her to show her the future. Back in the hospital room, Toki appears satisfied and says that if Ryuuka can see it, she will definitely win. Fairy Toki again appears behind Ryuuka and shakes her head before leaving.

After realizing that if Toki doesn't show her the way, she will not win, Toki appears once again to add a little clarity. This time Toki shows her a open tanyao. She then tells Ryuuka that she can only show her the highest scoring hand she can get during the round before leaving again. She once again appears with Ryuuka and informs her that she cannot stay with her and her power will run out with two more uses. She then shows Ryuuka a mangan before once again leaving. Later, Ryuuka again calls on Toki to help and she shows her a 16600 pt hand. Back in the hospital, she says one more time and that if she wasn't in the hospital she could've powered Ryuuka's thighs more. She then apologizes for not being able to use her lap. After the loss, she is seen crying and wanting to be beside Ryuuka because she is probably crying.

National Championship Arc[]

The night before the 5th place game, Toki announces she will participate in the game at a held press conference. She said the doctor told her it was accumulated fatigue and she also attributed it to not eating well the night before due to nerves. She then says that it is her that wants to participate and not the school forcing her to say this.

After all the participants gather in the arena and greet each other, Toki and the other vanguards sit at the table as the match begins. Immediately, Toki uses her future sight, and decides not to abort her hand which currently has 9 different honour and terminal tiles, baffling most others; her teammates agree that this means that Toki saw something more important than restarting the hand. Sure enough, Himematsu's Suzu Ueshige end up playing into Usuzan's Naruka Motouchi's daburii ippatsu baiman which drops Senriyama's rivals into 4th with a huge deficit from the get-go. She follows up the next hand by calling a riichi on her 7th discard. The others, predicting her ippatsu attempt to call to disrupt her draw; despite this, Toki says she already accounted for this, and lands a haneman tsumo.

In the next hand, Toki laments that she's getting a little tired, and thinks that for her juniors and teammates, she'll tough it out, and uses her future sight again. She declares riichi as the dealer, and wins a haneman tsumo. Both times, she cut her wait and yaku in order to win. Due to this, Suzu's fuse lights in the wake of Toki's power.

In the next hand of her dealership, Toki sees several possibilities for the up-coming hand, if she declares riichi, Hanada and Naruka will bail while Suzu will discard the slightly risky 9-sou; if she doesn't declare riichi, Naruka will play into her cheap hand, if she ignores the win, Suzu will declare riichi on the 9-sou. She decides to win off of Naruka in order to prevent Suzu's potential win. Unfortunately for Toki, Suzu wins two haneman consecutively, the first a tsumo during Toki's dealership, and the second directly off of Naruka.

During Suzu's dealership, everyone at the table is weary, when Hanada calls a chi and discards the red-5-man, despite using the regular one in her chi. Toki takes this to be a message of cooperation from Hanada, "I have a cheap hand, let me win and I'll do what you say," so Toki discards two tiles for Hanada to call a pon on, in order to prevent Suzu from drawing. Hanada wins due to drawing three dora in a row, and apologises to Toki, but she responds saying that Hanada has nothing to apologise for; Toki thinks it's okay as long as Shindouji doesn't surpass them later in the match. The hanchan ends when Toki wins a cheap hand with Senriyama 20,000 points in the lead and Shindouji barely positive.

She is seen during the vice captain match resting with Ryuuka in the nap room.

Ryuuka and Toki watch the championship game in their hotel (naked). She praises Toki for preventing Teru from her nine dealer repeats. However, Toki says no way she could do it alone and had help from strong opponents.

Playing Style/Abilities[]

Toki herself claims that she is a weaker player with her skill level and playing ability closer to the third team within Senriyama, and not worthy of a starting position. However, after being hospitalized, some time after the interhigh in her second year and before the spring tournament of her third year, she gained the strange ability to see one turn into the future. Satoha Tsujigaito says that after Toki got her powers, her mindset changed, and the tiles responded to this positively. Her future sight includes her own draws and the other player's discards and calls. She uses this to a strong effect, calling in strange spots to prevent other players' tsumos, and declaring riichi before her own to add the ippatsu yaku; this has almost never backfired within the same turn, but Uta Mihirogi has said that the following turn might derail Toki's initial plans. Her future sight has given her the prestige of having one of the highest, if not the highest, ippatsu rate in Japan - other players are aware of this, and from time to time, calling tiles may prevent her riichi. Toki also revealed that if she goes against what she sees in the future, she loses her future sight for a short period of time.

Toki's Exhaustion (Manga)

Toki's condition after seeing two turns for the first time in the semifinals.

Using her future sight has a significant toll on her health, however. She gets tired easily after using her ability to see one turn into the future several times over the course of two hanchan, and the first time she attempted to see two turns (at Ryuuka's inquiry), she fainted. While after that incident Ryuuka asked Toki to refrain from seeing two turns in order to protect Toki, she continued to practice in secret, and blacked out several times while practicing this. However, she built up enough resilience to use it a few times during the semifinals against Teru Miyanaga without fainting outright - she blacked out for a few seconds (between Kuro's draw and Teru's discard), calling it a flash nap. She also said she'd never had so much trouble drawing tiles before, and failed to keep her hand and discards physically straight as she barely had the strength to keep awake. In the that same match against Teru, she gained the ability to see three turns into the future.

Her future sight ability makes her great at collaborating with other players at the table to stop her main opponent, such as working together seamlessly with Kirame Hanada to keep Teru's winnings down. Collaborating with Kirame Hanada, she used her future sight to stop Teru's renchan thrice - the first time she picked the appropriate tile to give Kirame the win, the second time she tsumo'd, and the third she forced Teru to give the win to Kuro Matsumi. During her collaboration, she played into Kirame's hand to move the dealer rotation past Teru's dealership, gave Kirame tiles to call on to prevent Teru from drawing, and called to shift the draw in order to force Teru to discard Kuro's winning tile; her future sight was essential to keeping momentum away from Teru as it dictated the order in which to discard and call tiles to most effectively disrupt Teru.

By the time of the Match for 5th, Toki's abilities have greatly increased: she can see many parallel versions of the turn that's about to happen depending on what she does, and she shows less signs of wearing out from doing this several times in a row, only tiring out near the end of the hanchan, rather than immediately. For example, she saw that if she declared riichi, the other players would bail, but if she didn't, she could win off of another player, and still if she ignored the win, Suzu Ueshige would declare riichi. She also now strong enough for Suzu to explode off of, whereas previously she was not.
